Men's Basketball Has Three Named to NEWMAC Academic All-Conference

BOSTON, Mass. - Three members of the Wheaton College men's basketball team have been named to the 2016-17 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Academic All-Conference Team. Alex Sugarman, David Carbonello and Ben Christopher make up three of the 16 NEWMAC men's basketball student-athletes on the list.

Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2016 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) consists of 11 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

The Lyons ended the regular season with a 10-15 overall record and a 5-9 conference standing, which earned them the final spot in the NEWMAC Tournament. Wheaton will now take on No. 4 Springfield on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in a NEWMAC Quarterfinal. The winner of the quarterfinal between No. 4 Springfield (7-7) vs. No. 5 Wheaton (5-9) will battle Babson in the first semifinal.
