Seniors lead Lyons in victory
NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College senior Will Compton (Deering, N.H./Proctor Academy) scored a game-high five goals and dished out one assists as the Lyons defeated Mass. Maritime, 15-5, on "Senior Day" at Mirrione Stadium.
Prior to the contest, Compton and fellow seniors Nik Hodosy-Brander (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca School), Jack Croasdale (Manchester, N.H./Kents Hill School), Chad Wrisley (South Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy), Greg Smith (Centerport, N.Y./Chaminade), Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), Ian Casey (Medway, Mass./BB&N) and Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) were all honored for their contributions towards the men's lacrosse program.
Doherty contributed three goals and two assists to the offense while McNamara also found the back of the net three times. Sophomore Sean Finn (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk), junior Cam Hanlon (Hanson, Mass./BC High), freshman Alex Keiver (North Andover, Mass./Kimball Union Academy) and sophomore Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece.
Sophomore Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) guided the Buccaneers offense with a hat-trick, one assist and three ground balls. Classmate Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) scored his only goal of the game at 9:05 of the second quarter and sophomore Dillon Jones (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Bourne) tallied his lone marker with nine-seconds remaining in the contest.
The Lyons opened play with a 5-0 run that spanned into the second quarter. Compton got the offense going with 6:45 on the scoreboard in the first as he finished on a nice feed by Finn. McNamara made it 2-0 at the 4:41 mark and Doherty buried his 16th goal of the season one minute and 14-seconds later. Hanlon closed out the first quarter with an unassisted goal at 1:52.
After Compton netted his 15th goal of the year at 14:08 of the second quarter, Freudenberg broke up the shutout on a setup from senior John Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass./Cathedral). The Lyons went into the half with an 8-2 advantage and never looked back. Compton and Doherty highlighted the attack with two goals each in the second stanza.
Junior goalkeeper Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I./Trinity Pawling) stopped 12 shots on goal for Wheaton in 49:48 of action. Mass. Maritime junior goalkeeper Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) made a game-high 15 saves.
Freshman Paul Gray (Danbury, Conn./Millbrook School) went 9-for-14 at the face-off X and scooped up four ground balls to help the Lyons control the possession game winning the ground balls matchup, 45-27.
Wheaton (7-7, 4-2 Pilgrim) takes on Babson College in the Pilgrim League Tournament semifinals on Wednesday, May 1 at a time to be determined later. Mass. Maritime (5-9, 1-4 Pilgrim) hosts MIT in Pilgrim League regular season action on Monday, April 29 at 7 p.m.
