Babson Downs Wheaton, 14-5, In Pilgrim League Tournament Semifinals

Bramhall records 17 saves for Lyons 

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Third-seeded Wheaton College fell to second-seeded Babson College, 14-5, in the semifinal round of the Pilgrim League Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday night at MacDowell Field. 

The Beavers received markers from five different players in the first half alone including two tallies apiece from senior Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I./Providence Country Day), junior Alex Packer (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) and sophomore Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass./Masconomett). Sophomore Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) chipped in with two markers, one in each half, and three assists while Packer finished with three goals to highlight the offense. 

Wheaton freshman Alex Keiver (North Andover, Mass./Kimball Union Academy) potted the Lyons lone marker of the first half at 6:56. Seniors Will Compton (Deering, N.H./Proctor Academy) and Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School), sophomore Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) and freshman Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) all found the back of the net in the second half. Senior Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) set up Compton's tally at 13:42 of the fourth quarter for his 19th helper of the season. 

Babson jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the opening 4:37 of action as Patinkin buried his 31st goal of the season at 12:32 and Packer followed at the 10:30 mark with his 19th tally of the year on a feed from Patinkin. Russo concluded the scoring in the run seven seconds later off the ensuing face-off with an unassisted goal, his 16th of the season. 

 Keiver capped the scoring in the first with 6:56 remaining to cut into the deficit at 3-1 with his 11th goal of the season. The Beavers closed out the stanza on a 5-0 run to take a commanding 8-1 advantage into the break. Babson outscored Wheaton, 6-4, in the second half to advance to its second Pilgrim League Tournament finals game in three years. 

Lyons' junior goalkeeper Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I./Trinity Pawling) stopped a game-high 17 shots. The Beavers outshot Wheaton, 47-14, in the contest. Babson senior goalkeeper James Whalen (Westwood, Mass./Westwood/Pomfret School) made five saves to improve to 10-7 overall. 

Russo went 13-for-18 at the face-off X and scooped up seven ground balls to contribute to the Beavers 46-30 margin in that category. Wheaton senior Jack Croasdale (Manchester, N.H./Kent Hills School) led the Blue and White with nine ground balls. 

Babson (10-7) will take on first-seeded Springfield College in the Pilgrim League Tournament finals on Saturday, May 1 in Springfield, Mass. Wheaton's season comes to a close at 7-8 overall. Tonight marked the fourth-straight meeting between both squads in the Pilgrim League semifinals. Babson evened the series at 2-2 with its first win since 2010 against the Lyons in the semifinal round.
