Colombini Named Interim Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach

Longtime assistant elevated to interim HC

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College Director of Athletics and Recreation John Sutyak '00 has elevated men's lacrosse assistant coach Matt Colombini to interim head coach, effective immediately. Colombini takes over for Jamie Lockard who was recently named the head coach of the men's lacrosse program at Albright College located in Reading, Pa.

"We are very excited that Matt has agreed to become our interim head coach after the departure of Jamie Lockard. Matt has been extremely loyal over these past three seasons and brings an extremely strong work ethic and energy to the office that has helped solidify our men's lacrosse program as Jamie's top assistant." said Sutyak. "I look forward to working with Matt in preparing for the return of our student-athletes next month and as he begins the process of bringing prospective student-athletes in the class of 2020 to campus over the remaining part of the summer."

Colombini recently wrapped up his third season with the program primarily working with the team's goalkeepers and defense alongside his extensive recruiting duties. Under Colombini's steady watch, the Lyons have etched their names in the program record books top-10 list nine times, which was highlighted by this past season's achievement of compiling the most ground balls in program history with a total of 697 (41 per game).

Along with those numbers, Colombini's defensive units have finished in the top-3 in the conference in goals against average twice, and first overall once (2013). Individually, Colombini has coached three goalkeepers and four defenders to All-Conference laurels in only three seasons.

"I will be forever grateful towards Jamie Lockard for giving me an opportunity straight out of college to come work at Wheaton. He has been an incredible mentor for me over the past three years and helped me develop greatly in this profession," said Colombini. "I'd also like to thank John Sutyak and the entire Wheaton athletics department for giving me the opportunity to stay on as interim head coach. I am excited about this process and looking forward to continue working with the great student-athletes at Wheaton."

Before arriving at Wheaton, Colombini served as the varsity team defensive coordinator and goalie coach for the Cortlandt Wave Travel Lacrosse Program in Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. Colombini was responsible for preparing practice plans and schedules along with his instructional and evaluation duties with players on the team.

Prior to the Cortlandt Wave, Colombini worked for the Hendrick Hudson Lacrosse Camp in Montrose, N.Y. for four years as a camp counselor focusing on individual goalie skills with numerous members of the camp. Colombini has also served as an individual goalie coach during his time as an instructor in the New York region.

Colombini graduated from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. in 2012 with a bachelor of arts in history. Colombini was also a four-year member of the Bears men's lacrosse program. In 2011, he earned the All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship award.

A national search will be conducted to fill the men's lacrosse head coaching position during Colombini's time as the interim head coach.
