NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team defeated the Fighting Scots of Gordon College, 10-4, on Wednesday at Nordin Field.
Wheaton advances to 3-3 on the season as Gordon drops to 0-7.
The Lyons opened up the first quarter with three big goals to jump on the board. The first goal came from junior Will Morrison when he received a sharp pass from first-year CJ Leighton to get the early 1-0 lead. Junior Kyle Neale maintained the momentum for Wheaton when he netted his own goal at 10:16. Less than a minute later, junior Devin Higgins found his opportunity to knock in a goal at 9:27 to bring Wheaton ahead by three.
Higgins opened the second quarter with his second goal of the game when he utilized a pass from junior Ryan Gjerset to extend Wheaton's lead by four.
In the third quarter, first-year Connor Donaghy registered another goal for the Lyons when he netted a pass from first-year Mike Doucette. Sophomore Scott Whear carried Wheaton to a 6-0 lead when he tallied his first goal of the game at 13:03, he was assisted by Morrison.
The Fighting Scots received their opportunity to get on the board when senior Roger Evans collected a goal at 7:54 to chip away at Wheaton's lead.
However, the Lyons would push through two more goals before the third quarter was up from sophomore Zachary Brode and Neale.
Evans would continue to be the biggest offensive contender against Wheaton as he tallied two more goals, both in the fourth quarter to secure a hat trick and bring the score to 9-3. Sophomore Nico Manganiello was the final offensive push for the Fighting Scots when he found an opening and netted a goal at 4:14.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Clair (3-3) recorded the win for Wheaton with 10 saves in his 59 minutes played.
Wheaton led Gordon in ground balls a 31-20 and shots 38-34.
The Lyons host UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at Nordin Field with game time slated for 1 p.m.
