BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - After a three-goal deficit ending the first quarter, the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team came back to defeat the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers, 13-11, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Lyons (7-8, 3-4 NEWMAC) secured the No. 4 seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will battle No. 1 Springfield College (9-7, 7-0 NEWMAC) on Wednesday with game time to be determined.
Kyle Rumberger netted a hat trick and an assist for four points as the Lyons snapped a late tie with a pair of goals in the final 4:12 of play. Devin Higgins, Brian Teague and Josh Talanian each tallied two goals while James Holston, Alex Stomberg, Zachary Brode and Matt Morgan each registered one.
The Lyons chipped away at the 5-2 deficit from the first quarter by recording four of five second quarter tallies, as Rumberger's marker with 31 seconds remaining in the stanza staked Wheaton to a 7-6 advantage at the break.
Holston's goal with two seconds to play in the third quarter evened matters for Wheaton at 9-9 heading into the final frame, and the two teams traded scores in the first nine-plus minutes of the stanza until Morgan gave the Lyons the lead for good with 4:12 to play and Rumberger provided an insurance goal 51 seconds later to seal the 13-11 victory.
Goalkeeper Ryan Clair (6-8) dished out the win for Wheaton, tallying nine saves in his 60 minutes played.
The semifinals of the NEWMAC Tournament kick off on Wednesday, May 4, when #4 Wheaton travels to take on #1 Springfield with game time TBD.
