Men's Lacrosse Defeats New England College, 13-8

Newport News, Va. - The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team defeated the New England College Pilgrims, 13-8, on Monday for their first of two games in Virginia Beach.

The Lyons advance to 1-3 overall while the Pilgrims fall to 1-3.

Senior Will Morrison and sophomore Matt Morgan each tallied three goals an two assists in the victory for Wheaton while senior Ryan Gjerset and sophomore CJ Leighton both earned two goals and one assist. 

Morrison jumped on board first for the Lyons when he notched his first goal of the game at 14:14 with Morgan following at 13:26 with a goal of his own. The Pilgrims responded with a goal from Matt Richard to put them within one. The teams would end the first quarter tied at four before New England College would take a 5-4 lead to start the second.

Wheaton would shut them down from there with three unanswered goals to close out the first half coming from Morrison, Leighton and Gjerset.

In the third quarter, the Pilgrims would tack on three more goals, but Wheaton's offense would do even more as they registered five goals to make it 12-8. From there, the Lyons would record one more goal in the fourth from senior Zach Brode who was assisted by Morgan. Wheaton's defense would keep New England College away from another scoring opportunity to end regulation and seal the 13-8 victory.

First-year goalkeeper Colin Walsh tallied 12 saves in the game. Wheaton would also hold the 51-21 advantage on shots and 39-25 advantage on ground balls.

The Lyons compete next on Wednesday in Virginia Beach against Christopher Newport with game time beginning at 4 p.m.
