Strong First Half Propels Men's Lacrosse Past UMass.-Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team used a strong eight goal first half to push past host UMass.-Dartmouth 10-7 Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field in a non-conference battle.

The Lyons wasted no time getting started with Matt Morgan finding Ryan Gjerset for his first goal of the game a minute and a half into the contest. Morgan hooked up CJ Leighton a few minutes later to make it a 2-0 game.

UMass.-Dartmouth countered a little over a minute later with back-to-back goals, one from Anthony Gallo and the other from DJ Miller to tie the game at two-all.

Wheaton countered with six unanswered goals to end the opening half. Playing a man up, Morgan collected his third assist of the game and Gjerset his second goal with 6:23 to go in the opening quarter. Griffin Phaneuf and Scott Whear ended the first quarter with unassisted goals, handing Wheaton a 5-2 advantage.

The second quarter saw a goal from Maxwell McLaughlin and two more from Whear. Gjerset assisted on Whear's first goal, before Connor Donaghy dished the ball to Whear less than 10 seconds later.

UMass.-Dartmouth attempted a comeback in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals of its own in the third quarter. The Corsairs opened the fourth quarter with another goal from Gallo to cut the deficit to two.

With 9:16 left in the game, Will Morrison put away his first goal of the day, which was swiftly followed by a goal from James Holston. Miller earned one back for UMass.-Dartmouth at the end but it would not be enough.

Colin Walsh earned the win for the Lyons, coming up with 16 saves in 60 minutes, while Matt LaFond earned his fourth loss of the season.

The Lyons return to the field on Saturday, April 1 for their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener against Clark University at Diane C. Nordin '80 Field. The game is set for 1 p.m.
