NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team fell, 13-10, Sunday afternoon against the Clark University Cougars to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition, hosted at Nordin Field.
With the loss, the Lyons fall to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC play while the Cougars advance to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in conference.
Clark was led by Will Mandracchia and Brandon King who each tallied four goals in the game while Nick Johnson led the team with six assists. Sophomore CJ Leighton posted five goals for the Lyons to lead the team while sophomore Matt Morgan registered a hat trick and and one assist.
The Cougars jumped on the board first with two goals before Wheaton tallied their first goal of the game at 9:39 from junior Scott Whear. Clark would register one additional goal before the first quarter was over.
With a momentous second quarter, the Cougars recorded a total of seven goals to give them the 10-4 advantage leading into halftime. Of the seven goals by Clark, King scored four of them alone with Mandracchia dishing out two. Wheaton was only able to put up two goals this quarter from Morgan and senior Zach Brode.
The Cougars halted scoring action in the third quarter, only registering one goal as the Lyons worked to chip away the lead with goals two goals apiece from Morgan and Leighton, bringing them within three.
Wheaton tallied two additional goals in the fourth quarter, but it wouldn't be enough as Clark's Quincy Milton III and Jack Pierce each collected one goal and helped lead them to a 13-10 victory.
Clark goalkeeper Drew Riopelle-Tyrrell (2-4) earned five saves while Wheaton goalkeeper first-year Colin Walsh (3-5) recorded 20 saves in the first half and first-year Chandler Miller collected six in the second half.
Wheaton will host UMass-Boston on Tuesday for their next matchup which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Nordin Field
