Western New England defeats Wheaton, 4-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) netted his second goal of the season in Wheaton College's 4-1 loss to Western New England in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Supernant Field.

Seniors Corey Howard (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) and Eric Marcelino (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) each scored in the opening 16 minutes of the match for the Golden Bears, who improved to 3-1-0 with the win. The win drops the Lyons to 0-2-1.

The Golden Bears started fast when Howard scored his first goal of the season just 1:58 into the contest with an assist from senior Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills). Marcelino followed by scoring his first goal of the season in the 16th minute. Sophomore defender Jon Axton (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) picked up the assist.

WNE upped its margin to 3-0 when Fitzpatrick fired home a shot in the 31st minute off a feed from junior Shawn DaCruz (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow). It was the second goal of the year for Fitzpatrick.

The Lyons cut the deficit to 3-1 when Blair scored off a pass from junior David Turina (North Yarmouth, Maine/Northfield Mount Hermon School) in the 35th minute to cap the first half scoring. The Golden Bears outshot Wheaton 7-5 in the opening stanza.

In the second half, sophomore Jake Bartnik (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) potted his team-best fourth goal of the year in the 69th minute to complete the scoring. Senior Austin Santolini (Agawam, Mass./Pioneer Valley Christian) was credited with the assist.

Western New England finished the afternoon with a slim 14-13 edge in shots, while the Lyons held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Domenick Villano (Bronxville, N.Y./Tuckahoe) compiled four saves in his first start of the year for the Golden Bears. Freshman Devin Delfino (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) made three saves for Wheaton, which returns to action on Saturday when it welcomes Keene State to campus. The match begins at 1 p.m.
