NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's soccer team was unable to rebound from a two-goal deficit in the first half as the Lyons dropped a 2-1 decision to Brandeis University in non-conference action at Keefe Field on Tuesday evening.
Freshman forward Zach Viera (Andover, Mass./Brooks School) registered one goal and one assist, while sophomore forward Michael Chaput (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) supplied the eventual game-winner in the 43rd minute for the Judges.
Wheaton junior forward Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) netted his team-leading ninth goal of the season on a penalty kick in 78th minute to account for the Lyons lone tally.
Brandeis junior goalkeeper Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H./Concord) made one save in the win to improve his record to 7-0-0 on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) collected three stops on the other end of the pitch.
Viera gave the Judges a 1-0 lead at the 39:04 mark sneaking a shot just over the goal line after Dickey got a hand on the scoring bid. Chaput set up the tally with a through ball near the top left corner of the box.
At 42:39, Chaput buried his second marker of the season from the far right post off of an initial shot by Viera from the opposite side of the box.
Wheaton outshot Brandeis, 18-15, in the contest including an 11-5 margin in the second half. Both squads were even in corner kicks at six apiece.
Since 1989, the Lyons hold a 14-11-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Judges have won the last three meetings between both clubs outscoring the Blue and White by a 5-1 differential.
Wheaton (8-3-0, 2-0-0 NEWMAC) travels to Babson College for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Saturday, October 5 at 1 p.m. Brandeis (9-1-0) visits Case on Saturday at 11 a.m.
