BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team battled the Springfield College Pride in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship round, falling, 3-1, Sunday at MacDowell Field.
The Lyons move to 12-7-2 on the season while the Pride advance to 18-1-1 to claim the NEWMAC Championship title, their first one since 2011.
In the first half, Wheaton pulled even when junior Amara Sesay's free kick from the left sideline was headed into the upper corner by a Pride defender in the 30th minute to make it 1-1.
Before entering halftime, Springfield jumped back in front in the 41st minute after a goal was dribbled inside the inside the box and hit a hard left-footed shot to push them to a 2-1 advantage. The Pride later added an insurance goal in the 81st minute when they knocked a shot inside the right post for the 3-1 lead.
The Lyons finished with an 18-13 edge in shots and attempted nine of the game's 11 corner kicks.
Wheaton still has a chance to compete in the postseason with an at-large bid that will be announced Monday at 1 p.m.
