WESTWOOD, Mass. - Wheaton College senior captain Curran Wait earned a spot on the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference First-Team as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The Lyons also had junior co-captain JD Souza and junior defender Jules Stewart named to the NEWMAC Second-Team.
The all-conference nod is the second of Wait's career, with the midfielder earning a spot on the second-team following the 2017 season. The honor is the first for both Souza and Stewart.
Wait played in and started all 20 of the Lyons matches, finishing an astounding 6-for-6 from the penalty circle, which ranked him first in the NEWMAC. The senior midfielder also ended the season ranked third in the NEWMAC in goals (7) and fourth in points (16), which were both team bests. Wait's seven goals and 16 points are season bests for the captain, who ends his career with 15 goals and 39 points.
Souza picked up his first all-conference honor after anchoring the midfield in all 20 of Wheaton's matches. Souza ended the season with three goals and three assists.
A central defender, the all-conference nod is the first of Stewart's career. Despite controlling the backline, Stewart found a way to get into the action up top, scoring four times, while dishing out two assists.
As a unit, the Lyons ended the season ranked second in the NEWMAC in goals scored with 29, fifth in shots on goal, assists (19), and corner kicks (82), while leading the league in penalty kicks (6-for-7). Wheaton ended the season with a 9-10-1 overall record and 3-4 NEWMAC standing, making the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time under new head coach Bryan Waggoner.
Also picking up a post-season honor is sophomore midfielder Coby Goodrich who earned a spot on the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship. The NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship Team is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season.
