Lyons to play Clark in NEWMAC Tournament this weekend
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team earned an 8-1 non-conference win over Colby-Sawyer College on Thursday evening inside the Haas Athletic Center. Today's matched was moved indoors due to the potential of inclement weather.
Wheaton swept doubles action to open the match. Junior Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School) and first-year Tyler Butler (Portland, Maine/Deering) cruised to an 8-0 triumph at No. 3, while junior David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep) and senior Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) earned a hard-fought 8-4 win at No. 1.
Junior Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) and sophomore Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) completed the sweep at No. 2 doubles with a tightly contested 8-6 victory.
In singles play, Archer was victorious at the No. 4 position by a 7-5, 6-2 score. Butler claimed his seventh career victory at No. 6 and Gassen breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 1. White did not drop a set at No. 2, while Chan finished off his opponent in the No. 3 slot by a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 score.
Wheaton (7-7) travels to Clark University on Saturday, April 25 to play the Cougars in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Colby-Sawyer (9-9) hosts Green Mountain College in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m.
