Men's Tennis Defeats Clark 5-0 in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

NORTON, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Quarterfinals between No. 4 Wheaton and No. 5 Clark started as a tough back and forth fight for every point in doubles action Sunday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts. When all was said and done it was the host Lyons who came out on top, earning a 5-0 victory. 

Wheaton will now take on No. 1 MIT on Wednesday, May 1 in Cambridge, while Clark's season comes to an end with a 10-12 overall record. 

Wheaton opened with an 8-3 win in No. 3 doubles with the team of Ned Roosevelt and David Hernaez Sanz taking down Jacob Malicky and Max Schweiter

No. 2 doubles saw an exchange of leads between Jeremiah Ryser/Zach Strempel and Andrey Samodaeuv/Jack Han. After locking up the match, it was the Lyons who found some momentum, coming back to take the match 8-5. 

Ian Tracy and Javier Esteban de Celis had their hands full with Mick Mathieu and Chris Rubens in No. 1 doubles. Each side had possession of the lead several times, before deadlocking at 7-7, forcing a point break. Wheaton came out victorious, earning the point and taking the match 8-7. 

Leading 3-0 after doubles, Wheaton received a convincing win at No. 5 singles from Strempel, who once again defeated Han, this time 6-1, 6-1. 

Ryser ended the match in Wheaton's favor, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win over Samodaev.
