DEDHAM, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track & field teams opened the 2012 campaign Saturday at the Husky Spring Open at Solomon Track.
Senior Tope Waheed (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) was fourth in the hammer with a school-record throw of 164' 4"and also placed 13th in the shot put (29' 8 ¼").
Junior Ben Miklovich (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) was the highest finisher for the men, placing fourth in the 100m dash (11.25). Classmate Karl Mader (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) was 10th in the 1,500m run (4:18.14) and 14th in the 800m run (2:04.10). Senior Miles Ketchum (South Lee, Mass./Monumental Regional) placed three spots higher than Mader in the 800m run (2:02.73).
The men's 4x400m relay team finished second with a time of 3:24.56, which was less than half a second behind UMass Lowell. Newcomer Sam Fear took sixth in the javelin throw (174' 6").
On the women's side, seniors Ashley Dell'Aira (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham) (17' 3 ½") and Mickey Jusme (Providence, R.I./Classical) (16' 8 ½"), along with junior Amanda Claflin (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) (16' 7 ¼"), placed 1-2-3 in the long jump. Jusme also placed 13th in the 100m dash (13.16) while Claflin was 15th in the 200m dash (27.34).
Sophomore Mollie Lane (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) was second in the high jump (5' 3 ¼") and 15th in the long jump (14' 1 ¾"). Senior Savannah Geasey (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) was fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase (12:04.14) while sophomore Ashante Little (Seabrook, N.H./Winnacunnet) also took fourth in the 800m run (2:20.97), as did sophomore Shoshana Kruskal (Newton, Mass./Newton North) in the 5000m run (19:22.94).
Freshman Nichole Haar (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) placed seventh in the 400m hurdles (1:15.01) and 13th in the 100m hurdles (16.91) while senior Didine Jusme (Providence, R.I./Classical) finished ninth in the 400m hurdles (1:16.39) and 19th in the 100m hurdles (20.19). Senior Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, R.I./La Salle) took 16th in the 200m dash(27.41).
In the throws, junior Sylvia Okoye (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) placed fourth in the discus throw (118" 7'), eighth in the shot put (33" 4'), and ninth in the hammer throw (138' 11"). Senior Tope Waheed (East Providence, R.I./East Providence), meanwhile, was fourth in the hammer (164' 4") and 13th in the shot put (29' 8 ¼").
The women's 4x100m 'B' relay team captured sixth-place (52.11) while the 'A' (4:14.22) and 'B' (4:16.67) teams finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 4x400m relay.
Wheaton returns to action next Saturday at the Snowflake Classic in Medford, Mass.
