Sullivan produces N.E. DIII qualifying mark
GORHAM, Maine – The Wheaton College men's track and field team opened up its 2015 season at the University of Southern Maine Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Brendan Sullivan (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) produced a New England Division III Championships qualifying mark in the high jump with a leap of 6-feet and 2-inches for second place honors in the event.
Wheaton's 4x400-meter relay team consisting of first-year Nicholas Balow (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), juniors Alexei Spinu (New Canaan, Mass./New Canaan) and Sam Miklovich (Gray New Gloucester, Maine/Gray New Gloucester) and sophomore Dylan Cooper (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) won the event with a time of 3:37.43.
Balow and Miklovich also teamed up with senior Olufunsho Olagundoye (Victoria Island, Nigeria/Cushing Academy) and junior Javon Mullings (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) for a second place finish in the 4x100-meter relay in 1:45.81.
In their individual events, Spinu ranked first overall in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:38.58, nearly three seconds better than the second place finisher, while Cooper was second in the 600-meter run (1:26.69) and Miklovich placed fourth in the 400-meter run (54.52).
Balow placed fifth overall in the 200-meter run with a time of 25.53-seconds, while Mullings also notched a fifth place finish in the 55-meter dash in 6.91-seconds.
In the distance events, senior Brendon Pickering (Merrimac, Mass./Waring) crossed the finish line in the one mile run with a time of 4:43.25 for sixth place overall and classmate John Green (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) came in fifth place in the 3,000-meter run in 9:07.07.
Wheaton returns to action next Saturday at the Bates Invitational.
