Ryan O’Connell will enter his fourth season as the assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Wheaton College during the 2019-20 academic year. O’Connell came to Wheaton College after a one-year stint as assistant track and field coach at Bridgewater State University where he worked with both the men’s and women’s middle distance and distance runners. Ryan got his coaching start at his alma mater, Springfield College, and he spent two seasons as the graduate assistant. He worked with the cross country and track and field programs and focused on the distance and middle distance runners.
During his undergraduate career at Springfield, O’Connell was a four-year member of the cross country and track & field teams, serving as captain for cross country for two years and captain for the track and field team for three. As a Cross Country athlete, he qualified for nationals twice, earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors three times, as well as New England D3 All Region honors three times. As a Track and field athlete, he qualified for nationals in the 1500m, earned New England D3 All Region honors eight times, earned All Division New England honors twice, and earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors once.
Ryan earned a Bachelors degree in Recreation and Sport Management in 2013, and completed his Masters degree in Athletic Administration in 2015 from Springfield as well. Additionally, O'Connel has earned certifications in strength and conditioning, endurance specialist, jumps event specialist, and a level 1 technical track and field coaching certification, all from the USTFCCA Track and Field Academy.
