KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Juniors Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H./Concord) and Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) each drove in three runs on the day as the Wheaton College softball team opened their season with losses to Anderson (Ind.) (5-0) and Trine (11-10) Saturday at the Rebel Spring Games.
In the opener against the Ravens, junior Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School) and sophomore Ashley Brillion (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) picked up the only hits against senior starting pitcher Monica Crowe (Muncie, Ind.), who struck out 10 to earn the win.
Anderson (1-0) put up a '3' spot in the first - highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of senior Stephanie Atkins (Indianapolis, Ind.) - and tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth to pad its lead.
Wheaton's best chance to get back into the game came in the fourth when freshman Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin School) and Roy opened the inning with back-to-back walks before a double play ended the inning.
Sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) took the loss against Anderson, allowing eight hits and four runs over five innings. She walked two and struck out three.
Wheaton grabbed an early 1-0 lead against the Thunder when sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) lead off the inning with a walk and scored on a single by Roy. The Lyons lead held up until the fourth when Trine scored five times - capped by a two-run single by freshman Leah Hall (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) - to take a 5-1 lead.
The Lyons answered with four in the top of the fifth to tie the game at five. Laflam sparked the rally with a two-run single, followed by an RBI double by Roy. Later, with the game tied at six in the top of the eighth, Rocha launched a two-run home run to center field to highlight a three-run inning and give the Lyons an 9-6 lead.
The Thunder (7-3) rallied for three runs in their half of the eighth to tie the game, the third run coming on a double by Hall. Roy drove in Laflam in the ninth to put Wheaton in front 10-9, but an RBI double by Trine sophomore Haleigh Daniels (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) tied the game at 10. Junior Lindsey Wise (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) followed with a walk-off single that plated Daniels.
Baker worked 8.2 innings for the Lyons and allowed 16 hits and 11 runs (four earned) with no walks and six strikeouts in the loss.
