KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Junior Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H./Concord) went 2-for-4 with three RBI in Wheaton College's 7-5 loss to McDaniel College in non-conference softball action Monday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games.
Sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) and freshman Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) each drove in a run for the Lyons (0-3), who scored five times in the second to build a 5-0 lead, only to see the Green Terror (3-2) score three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and once more in the sixth.
Wheaton opened the second with consecutive singles from junior Amanda Drury (Tolland, Conn./Tolland), sophomore Vanessa Campbell (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton School), and senior Valerie Tratner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Saint Frances Prep). Christmas brought in the first run with a bunt single, and two batters later, Rocha plated Campbell with a single to left to make it 2-0 Wheaton. Later in the inning, Laflam delivered a bases-clearing double that plated Tratner, Campbell and Rocha and gave the Lyons a 5-0 lead.
Wheaton sophomore starting pitcher Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) worked a 1-2-3 third inning but ran into trouble in the fourth. McDaniel loaded the bases with no outs and scored its first run on a force out by junior Jackie Liebowitz (Bellerose, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cordozo). After a strikeout and a walk, senior Lauren Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled to right to bring in two more and give the Green Terror a 3-2 lead. Wheaton committed a pair of error in the inning and, as a result, all three runs were unearned.
In the fifth, senior Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) drilled a two-run home run over the left field fence to tie the game at five, and sophomore Stephanie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the frame. Beans picked up her third RBI of the game in the seventh on a force out.
Senior Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) earned the win for the Green Terror. She allowed eight hits and five runs (all earned) with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings of work. Freshman Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) pitched 2.1 innings of hitless ball to earn the save. She walked one and struck out five.
Baker took the loss for Wheaton, allowing nine hits and six runs (three earned) with one walk and two strikeouts. Christmas pitched two innings in relief and allowed one hit and an unearned run to go along with one strikeout.
The Lyons were slated to face Utica Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. McDaniel will face Illinois-Wesleyan and Defiance Tuesday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectivelty.
