Lyons make it a perfect day with 3-2 win over Skidmore

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Senior Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) each drove in runs in the fourth to propel the Wheaton College softball team to a 3-2 win over Skidmore College in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games.

Freshman Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) tossed a complete game five-hitter for the Lyons, who defeated Otterbein University 5-4 earlier in the day and improve to 2-4 on the season.

In the first, Monahan roped a one-out single to right and came around to score on a double by junior Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H./Concord) to put Wheaton in front 1-0.

The Thoroughbreds (3-4) touched up Christmas for a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Lauren Bernstein (White Plains, N.Y./The Masters School) singled to right to bring in a pair of runs – the second of which was unearned because of an error on the right fielder.

Wheaton loaded the bases in its half of the inning and tied the game at two on an RBI groundout by Poplaski. Rocha followed with a single to the shortstop that brought in junior Amanda Drury (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Freshman Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with a run scored for Wheaton. Fellow freshman Katie Amo (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) also went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Thoroughbreds.

The Lyons return to action Thursday afternoon with a 1 p.m. contest against Lake Forest (Ill.). Skidmore faces Austin College this afternoon at 3 p.m.
