KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Junior Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H.) went 3-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to propel the Wheaton College softball team to a 3-0 win over Farmingdale State in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games.
Sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) pitched a complete game, five-hitter to earn her second win of the season for the Lyons (3-5), who have won three of their last four. The loss drops the Rams to 5-2.
Wheaton broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feeham) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double down the left field line by Laflam for the game's first run. Sophomore Vanessa Campbell (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton School) followed with a single to right to move Laflam to third. Two batters later, junior Amanda Drury (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) brought in Laflam with an RBI groundout.
In the fifth, Laflam laced an RBI double that plated junior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) and stretched the Lyons lead to 3-0. The Rams best scoring threat came in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out, but senior Rebecca Richman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip grounded into a 5-2 double play to end the frame.
Senior Hope Zino (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) allowed seven hits and three runs with three walks and three strikeouts for the Rams. Offensively, freshman Patricia Johnson (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) went 2-for-3.
The Lyons complete competition at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday with games against Framingham State at 9 a.m. and Centenary (N.J.) at 1 p.m. The Rams face Skidmore this evening at 5 p.m.
