KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Wheaton College's 5-0 win over Framingham State in non-conference softball action Friday morning at the Rebel Spring Games.
Classmate Vanessa Campbell (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton School) went 3-for-3 with a run scored for the Lyons, who have won two-straight and four of their last five games to climb to within a game of .500 at 4-5. Sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) and freshman Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) combined to toss a two-hit shutout as Baker improved to 3-4 with the win.
The Lyons scored the only runs they would need in the top of the second. Sophomore Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) opened the frame with a double and scored on a single by Rocha for the game's first run. Senior Valerie Tratner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to push the Lyons lead to 2-0, and senior Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) accounted for Wheaton's third run when she scored on a passed ball.
Wheaton tacked on insurance runs in the third and fourth innings to account for the final score. Brillon scored on a wild pitch in the third to stretch the lead to 4-0, and Rocha tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by junior Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School) in the fourth to cap the scoring.
Baker pitched the first four frames and allowed just two hits while striking out three. Berardi closed the contest with three hitless frames, picking up a pair of strikeouts along the way. Sophomore Alyssa Begin (Salem, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) took the loss for Framingham (3-6), allowing seven hits and five runs (one earned) with two walks and three strikeouts.
Wheaton wraps up play in Florida this afternoon with a 1 p.m. contest against Centenary (N.J.). The Rams were set to face Rutgers-Camden at 11 a.m.
