BEVERLY, Mass. - Sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) recorded four hits - including a three-run home run - as the Wheaton College softball team split its doubleheader at Endicott College in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Gulls won game one 5-4 before the Lyons scored a 7-1 win in the nightcap.
Sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) tossed a complete game, seven- hitter in the nightcap as the Lyons moved to 12-12 on the season. With the split, Endicott moves to 10-6.
Endicott scored in the first, second, and fourth innings of game one to build a 3-0 lead. All three runs came in on sacrifice flies - two by junior Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn./Mercy) and another by sophomore Kelley Michael (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich).
Trailing by three entering the fifth, the Lyons tied the game on one swing of the bat. Rocha belted a three-run home run over the left field fence that brought in senior Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and junior Amanda Drury (Tolland, Conn./Tolland). Later in the frame, junior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) singled in classmate Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School) to give the Lyons a 4-3 lead.
The Gulls tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by junior Krista Fales (Melrose, Mass./Melrose). In the seventh, the Lyons retired the first two batters before junior Colleen Martin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) took first after being hit by a pitch. Michael followed with a single to shortstop to put runners on first and second, and junior Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) singled to right to bring in Martin and give Endicott the win.
Freshman Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) suffered the loss for the Lyons, allowing 10 hits and five runs with two strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Sophomore Danielle LaRocque (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) earned the win in relief for Endicott as she surrendered three hits and no runs over the final three innings of the contest.
In the nightcap, sophomore Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) staked the Lyons to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout. After the Gulls scored an unearned run in their half of the inning to tie the score, Wheaton went ahead for good with a pair of runs in the third. Rocha led off with a double and scored on a single by Christmas. After Christmas advanced to third on a stolen base and a passed ball, Brillon lifted a sac fly to left field to bring her home.
Wheaton tacked on three more in the fifth behind a two-run double off the bat of Roy and a run-scoring error. Senior Valerie Tratner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) singled in an insurance run in the seventh to cap the scoring and give Baker her eighth win of the season. LaRocque allowed five hits and three runs in 2.1 innings of work for EC and fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Lyons host MIT Friday at 3 p.m. The Gulls travel to Wenham, Mass. for a 4 p.m. doubleheader with Gordon tomorrow afternoon.
