SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The No.5 seed Wheaton College softball team was defeated by No. 1 seed Springfield 12-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament action Tuesday afternoon at Potter Field.
The loss leaves the Lyons (18-20) - who downed No. 4 WPI 6-0 earlier in the day - at 1-1 heading into Saturday's elimination game with No. 3 Wellesley, who fell to No. 6 Coast Guard 5-2 in Babson Park this afternoon. Sophomores Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) and Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) had the only hits on the afternoon for Wheaton.
Springfield scored once in the first, six times in the third and five times in the fourth to build a 12-0 lead. Junior Breann Joyce (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run and three RBI to lead the Pride (23-12-1). Classmate Chelsea Bender (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchan) followed Joyce's blast with a solo shot in the third while senior Tess Gagliano (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Mater Del) went 2-for-2 with two RBI and sophomore Christina Leader (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) drove in three with a bases-clearing triple in the fifth.
Sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) suffered the loss for Wheaton, allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned) with one walk and three strikeouts. Sophomore Ashley Marino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) improved to 13-6 with the win as she struck out nine over five innings.
Wheaton travels to Bristol, R.I. tomorrow for a pair of games with Roger Williams University, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Pride host No. 2 Babson Saturday at 10 a.m.
