BRISTOL, R.I. - The Wheaton College softball team split its non-conference doubleheader at Roger Williams University on Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 6-2 before dropping the nightcap 6-3 at Paolino Field.
The split moves the Lyons to 19-21 heading into the second day of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament action Saturday against Wellesley.
In the opener, the Lyons scored five times in the fourth to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead. Laflam doubled in the first run of the frame to tie the game, and RBI singles from senior Valerie Tratner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) and freshman Aimee Avila (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) put Wheaton in front 3-1. Monahan's two-run triple later in the inning brought home both Avila and Tratner.
The Lyons tacked on one more in the seventh on an RBI single by Berardi, and sophomore starting pitcher Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) surrendered one in the seventh before recording the final out for her 13th win of the season and 15th complete game. She gave up eight hits and two runs (one earned) with no walks and two strikeouts.
Senior Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) took the loss for the Hawks (18-21) as she allowed 11 hits and six runs (five earned) with no walks and five strikeouts. Freshman Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass./Milford) went 2-for-3 with an RBI for RWU.
The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two on an RBI double by senior Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) and an RBI single from freshman Julia Giancola (Durham, Conn./Coginchaug). Wheaton tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) plated senior Amanda Drury (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) with a double in the fifth before freshman Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) brought in Laflan with an RBI single to center the following inning.
Wheaton went ahead 3-2 in the seventh. Senior Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) led off with a single and scored on a sac fly by sophomore Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan). In the bottom half of the frame, Pirez smacked a leadoff home run off Christmas to tie the game at three. Following singles from Giancola and junior Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks), senior Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y./Bellport) hit a walk-off three-run home run over the left field fence.
Wheaton freshman Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) pitched the first three innings and allowed two hits and two runs with two walks and one strikeout. Christmas suffered the loss to fall to 6-8 on the season. In 3.1 innings of relief, she surrendered seven hits and four runs while striking out two. Senior Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) tossed a complete game for the Hawks and improved to 3-0 with the win. She gave up 10 hits and three runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
Rocha, Christmas, and Poplaski each recorded two hits for Wheaton, as did Pirez, Giancola, and junior Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) for the Hawks.
The Lyons and Blue begin their NEWMAC playoff contest at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Hawks return to action on Monday when they face either Eastern Nazarene or Nichols in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament at Salve Regina.
