Baker, Rocha Combine For No-Hitter, Wheaton Completes Doubleheader Sweep

Duo records fourth combined no-no in program history

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Wheaton College junior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) and freshman Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) threw the fourth combined no-hitter in program history to highlight the Lyons doubleheader sweep on day three of the Rebel Spring Games.

Wheaton 9, Fitchburg St. 1

Baker bumped her record to 2-1 overall on the season with five clean innings in the circle inducing nine ground outs and seven fly outs. Ji. Rocha held the Falcons hitless over the last two innings to help record the fourth combined no-hitter in program history and first since 2005. Ji. Rocha allowed her only run on two walks and a throwing error in the seventh.

Fitchburg State (0-3) junior Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) suffered the loss giving up nine runs (all earned) on ten hits, ten walks and six strikeouts in seven innings.

Senior shortstop Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead in the second drawing a bases loaded walk with two outs. Rocha lifted the Lyons advantage to 2-0 in the fourth with a run-producing double to right-center field and freshman Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) made it 3-0 with an RBI infield single.

Wheaton added six more runs over the next three innings compiling five hits and five RBI's. Je. Rocha collected two RBI's in the seventh with a single to center field giving her four on the afternoon.

Je. Rocha, Hart, senior first baseman Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) and junior catcher Ashley Vertente (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) all had two hits apiece.

Wheaton 1, Sage 0 (eight innings)

Sophomore Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) earned the win in relief for the Lyons tossing four hitless innings while yielding four walks. Classmate Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) landed the no-decision on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Sage (1-2) graduate student Rachel Smith (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) was dealt the loss on seven-and-two-thirds innings, seven hits, one run (unearned), one walk and two punchouts.

In the bottom of the eighth, Vertente - who was placed at second base to begin the frame per extra inning rules - advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H./Concord) to set up the game-winning run. Christmas followed with a bunt single down the first base line and Vertente came around to score on a throwing error into right field.

Wheaton escaped a jam in the top half of the inning with a fine defensive play from junior third baseman Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan). With runners on second and third and no outs, Brillon snared a one-hopper at third and tagged out the runner who advanced too far up the line for a double play. Christmas closed out the inning by inducing a pop out.

Je. Rocha and Hart both went 2-for-4 from the top of the lineup. The Lyons tallied seven hits including three extra-base hits (all doubles) from Rocha, Laflam and Roy.

Wheaton (3-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) takes a day off before the Lyons return to action on Wednesday, March 13 against Waynesburg University at 11:00 a.m. and Montclair State University, ranked no.1 overall in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, at 1:00 p.m.
