KISSIMEE, Fla. – The Wheaton College softball team was swept by Waynesburg University and Montclair State University, ranked no.1 overall in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 poll, on day four of competition at the Rebel Spring Games. The Lyons lost to the Jackets, 4-2, and also fell to the Red Hawks, 11-2, in six innings.
Waynesburg 4, Wheaton 2
Junior Carrie Maier (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) earned the win with a complete game effort in the circle for the Jackets. Maier gave up four hits, two runs (one earned), zero walks and also struck out two batters.
Wheaton sophomore Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) took the loss on six innings pitched, seven hits, four runs (three earned), two walks and two punchouts.
The Lyons held an early 1-0 advantage after one half inning of play as freshman Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) doubled to left field with one out and eventually came around to score on a throwing error.
In the bottom of the second, Waynesburg capitalized on a throwing error to even up the contest at 1-1. Freshman Jessica Dorazio (Cokeburg, Pa./Bentworth) scored the tying run after leading off the frame with a double to left-center field.
Senior Rachael Moon (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda) pushed the Jackets ahead, 2-1, in the third with an RBI infield single to short. Waynesburg tacked on single runs in the fifth and the sixth innings as freshman Cameron Grimes (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) plated a run with a ground out and sophomore Ashley Clark (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) brought home a runner in the sixth with an infield single to third base.
Freshman Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton) cut deficit in half, 4-2, with her first-career collegiate homer in the seventh. The Lyons also had a runner thrown out at home in the third.
Hart collected the only multi-hit game for Wheaton going 2-for-3 with one run scored from the no.2 spot in the lineup.
#1 Montclair State 11, Wheaton 2 (six innings)
Junior Alex Hill (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) notched the win in relief going two-and-two-thirds innings allowing zero hits, no runs, one walk and a game-high five strikeouts. Classmate Alison Cullen (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) landed the no-decision on three-and-one-thirds innings, five hits, two runs (both earned), three walks and three strikeouts.
Lyons' junior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) was dealt the loss on four innings, ten hits, seven runs (all earned), zero walks and three punchouts.
The Red Hawks plated two runs in the third and another five in the fourth to jump out to a 7-0 lead over Wheaton. Senior Jamie Paulino (Linden, N.J./Linden) led the offense with three RBI's on a pair of doubles to left-center field.
The Lyons responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame as junior Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) drove in senior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) with a single to center field and senior Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School) drew a bases loaded walk.
Montclair State added four runs on four hits and no errors to eventually force the mercy rule.
Wheaton (3-5, 0-0 NEWMAC) closes out its spring break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Defiance College at 3:00 p.m. and Illinois Wesleyan at 5:00 p.m.
