Baker strikes out six in game one
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Wheaton College softball team split its doubleheader matchup between Defiance College and Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games. The Lyons concluded their spring break trip with a 2-1 win over the Yellow Jackets and an 8-0 loss to the Titans.
Wheaton 2, Defiance 1
Junior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) improved her record to 3-2 overall on the season on seven innings pitched, five hits, one run (earned), zero walks and a game-high six strikeouts.
Freshman Alli Rowland (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) took the loss on six innings of work, three hits, two runs (both unearned) and two strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets (4-3) got on the scoreboard first as senior left fielder Katie Miller (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) punched home a run with a single to center field.
Wheaton, who was held scoreless through the first five innings of play, rallied for two runs in the sixth on one hit and three errors. Freshman left fielder Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) kept the inning alive with a double down the right field line with two outs and eventually came around to score the tying run on a fielding error at first base and a throwing error to home. Junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error at first.
In the seventh, Baker retired the first two batters she faced on a strikeout swinging and a fly out to center field. After giving up a single to the third batter in the frame, Baker closed out the game with her sixth and final strikeout.
Illinois Wesleyan 8, Wheaton 0 (five innings)
Illinois Wesleyan sophomore Chloe Montgomery (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) pitched a perfect game against the Lyons striking out nine batters.
Sophomore Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) was handed the loss on four-and-two-thirds innings pitched, seven hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks.
Junior Erin Sweeney (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) launched two home runs and notched three RBI's while senior Emma Clark (Morton, Ill./Morton) hit a three-run homer in the fifth to highlight the scoring for the Titans (7-1).
Wheaton (4-6, 0-0 NEWMAC) will host Bridgewater State University on Tuesday, March 19 for a doubleheader with game one scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
