Christmas, Berardi blank Anchorwomen in game two
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wheaton College softball team split a pair of non-conference games versus Rhode Island College (RIC) on Tuesday night at the Dayna A. Bazar Memorial Softball Field.
RIC 14, Wheaton 6 (five innings)
RIC senior Emily Johnson (West Kingston, R.I./South Kingstown) improved to 4-1 overall on the season throwing all five innings, giving up six hits, six runs (all earned), five walks and six strikeouts.
Junior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) took the loss on four-and-one-thirds innings pitched, 14 hits, 11 runs (nine earned) and no walks.
Wheaton held a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning before the Anchorwomen offense exploded for 14 runs on 16 hits, two errors and three runners left on base.
Senior Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H./Concord) plated a run with an RBI single to right-center field and swiped a bag on the back end of a double steal as freshman Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) stole home for the Lyons second run in the opening frame. In the third, senior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) cleared the bases with a three-run single to right field.
RIC cut into the deficit at 5-2 with back-to-back RBI doubles from senior Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) and sophomore Carli Matrisian (Milford, Conn./Foran) in the bottom half of the third. The Anchorwomen eventually forced the mercy rule in the fifth as freshman Abigail Francis (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) connected for a three-run double and junior Stacy Pokora (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) ended the game with a two-run single to right-center field to highlight the scoring.
Wheaton 6, RIC 0
Junior Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) helped the Lyons split with the Anchorwomen in game two throwing five innings, yielding three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Classmate Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) closed out the final two innings allowing one hit and one walk to go along with a strikeout.
RIC junior Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, R.I./Veterans) was dealt the loss on five innings of work, eight hits, five runs (all earned), two walks and two strikeouts.
Wheaton jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning on four hits and one error. Roy drew a bases loaded walk and junior Ashley Vertente (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) roped a two-run single to left field. The Lyons scored their first run in the frame on a throwing error after Laflam singled to left field.
Senior Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School) drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt in the fourth and junior Vanessa Campbell (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton School) notched an RBI ground out in the seventh to cap Wheaton's scoring.
Hart went 5-for-7 at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI combined in both games. Roy was 3-for-5 with four RBI's and one run scored.
Wheaton (7-7, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts Smith College in its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season on Friday, March 29 at 3:00 p.m. RIC (7-5, 0-0 LEC) welcomes Worcester State University to the Dayna A. Bazar Memorial Softball Field on Thursday with game one scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
