Hart goes 6-for-8 in sweep over Pioneers
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team opened up its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate with a doubleheader sweep of Smith College by scores of 8-0 (five innings) and 5-0 on Friday evening at Clark Field.
Wheaton 8, Smith 0 (five innings)
Junior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) hurled a five inning shutout yielding two hits, no walks and three strikeouts.
Freshman Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) was handed the loss on 11 hits, six runs (five earned), no walks and two punchouts.
In the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded, freshman Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) laced an RBI single to left field plating classmate Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) to force the mercy rule. Junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) also drove in a run in the frame with a walk in the previous plate appearance.
Wheaton grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first as senior Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H./Concord) smacked an RBI double to left field and junior Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) plated a run with a single through the left side of the infield.
Senior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) added an RBI single to center in the third and another run-producing base knock in the fourth. Je. Rocha got the offense going in the frame as she connected on a double to deep center field to score Ji. Rocha, who doubled earlier in the inning.
The Pioneers only had one runner in scoring position in game one as freshman Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) led off the contest with a double to left-center field. Baker turned away Smith's offense chance with a pair of pop outs and a fly out to center.
Wheaton 5, Smith 0
Sophomore Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) improved to 4-1 overall with six shutout innings. Christmas allowed five hits, one walk and struck out a game-high five batters. Classmate Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) pitched a clean seventh to secure the win.
Freshman Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) took the loss on six innings, 13 hits, five runs (all earned), no walks and four strikeouts.
Back-to-back triples from freshman Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) and Christmas gave the Lyons a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Je. Rocha followed with an RBI single to center field to push Wheaton's advantage to 2-0.
The Lyons tacked on two more runs in the fifth as Roy brought home Hart on a double to center field and freshman Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton) knocked in Roy later in the frame with an RBI single to right field. Hart rounded out the scoring in the sixth with an RBI groundout to second base.
In the two game set, Hart compiled a .750 batting average (6-for-8), three runs and two RBI's while Laflam and Ji. Rocha hit .667 at the plate. Je. Rocha and Roy led the team in the RBI column with three each. Je. Rocha also had two doubles in the second game of the twinbill.
Wheaton (9-7, 2-0 NEWMAC) hosts WPI for a NEWMAC doubleheader at Clark Field tomorrow with game one scheduled for noon. Smith (4-8, 0-4 NEWMAC) takes on Clark University in a conference matchup tomorrow at 1 p.m.
