Softball Rallies In Game Two For Split With Babson College

Welch homers twice in nightcap for Lyons

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Wheaton College freshman Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton) launched two homers to help the Lyons split a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games against Babson College by scores of 6-1 and 8-3 on Friday evening at Alumni Field.

Babson 6, Wheaton 1

Babson junior Kathleen Conway (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) bumped her record to 6-4 overall on the season over seven innings of work yielding three hits, one run (earned), two walks and a game-high 16 strikeouts. Conway took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before freshman Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) notched an infield single to the shortstop to break it up.

Wheaton junior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) was handed the loss on six innings, six hits, six runs (all earned) and two walks.

Senior Catie Funk (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) provided the Beavers a two-run lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run shot down the left field line. Babson tacked on four runs in the sixth as freshmen Maya Lacy (East Mill Creek, Utah/Skyline) and Emily Morris (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott), senior Ashleigh Phelps (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and junior Kelly King (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) drove in one run apiece.

Freshman Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter) led off the seventh with a double to right field for the Lyons and eventually came around to score on a single to left-center field from Welch to erase the shutout.

Wheaton 8, Babson 3

Junior Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) allowed three runs (all earned) on six hits, no walks and three strikeouts in five innings pitched to push her record to 6-2 overall. Sophomore Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) collected her first save of the season giving up one hit over two shutout innings.

Senior Megan Brain (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) fell to 1-3 overall surrendering four runs (all earned) on three hits, one walk and punchout in one inning pitched.

Wheaton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on a run-producing double to center field from Timoteo and a three-run shot by Welch to right.

Babson answered in the bottom half with three runs on five hits, one error and two runners left on base. Phelps, freshman Caitie Benoit (Williamstown, Mass./Westborough) and junior Christa Shorette (Southington, Conn./Southington) all had RBI singles.

Junior Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) got a run back for the Lyons in the second as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Freshman Erin Deneen (Framingham, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) lifted a sac fly to left field in the fifth and Welch put the game away in the seventh with a two-run bomb to right field plating Timoteo.

Welch powered the offense going 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, two homers and six RBI's. Timoteo also went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, three doubles and one RBI.

Wheaton (14-10, 4-2 NEWMAC) travels to MIT tomorrow for a NEWMAC doubleheader clash with game one scheduled for noon. Babson (11-8, 3-2 NEWMAC) visits WPI for a conference twinbill tomorrow at noon with both games being played at Clark University.
