Brillon goes 5-for-8 with two doubles in sweep
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team swept a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games versus Clark University by scores of 8-0 and 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
Wheaton 8, Clark 0
Sophomore Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) spun a complete game two-hit shutout alongside two walks and a game-high five strikeouts. Berardi also launched a two-run homer in the seventh inning, her second longball of the season.
Clark senior Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) was dealt the loss on four innings, six hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks.
Freshman Erin Deneen (Framingham, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) punched home the Lyons first run of the game in the second with a double to right-center scoring junior Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) from third. Brillon led off the frame with a double to left-center and moved up one base on a fielding error. Freshman Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and Deneen came around to score on a throwing error.
Wheaton put the game away in the fourth with two runs on three hits, no errors and two runners left on base. Freshman Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) plated a run with an RBI single to left field and classmate Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter) notched an RBI single to center field.
In the fifth, Hatch and Deneen executed a double steal to bring across the Lyons sixth run of the contest and some added insurance.
The Cougars best chance to score came in the first inning as the hosts had the bases loaded with two outs. Berardi, who gave up both of her hits in the opening frame, fanned freshman Marisa Linehan (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) to squander the threat. Berardi went on to retire the side in order on five separate occasions including the last four consecutive innings.
Wheaton 4, Clark 1
Junior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) scattered six hits over seven innings, allowed one run (earned), two walks and three strikeouts to earn her tenth win of the season. Clark freshman Veronica Shader (West Brookfield, Mass./Ware) connected for a solo homer in the fifth for the Cougars only run.
Sophomore Hayley Buckheit (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills Regional) was touched up for 13 hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks over seven innings.
The Lyons held a 2-0 advantage after four-and-a-half innings of play as Berardi scored on a throwing error in the fourth and senior Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H./Concord) had an RBI single to left in the fifth. Wheaton tacked on to its lead in the seventh with run-producing singles to center field from Timoteo and Berardi.
Brillon went 5-for-8 (.625) in two starts with three runs scored and two doubles. Hart, Berardi and Timoteo all hit .500 (4-for-8) at the plate for the Lyons.
