Timoteo goes 3-for-6 with three runs, three doubles and three RBI

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.  – The Wheaton College softball team opened up its 2014 slate with a pair of non-conference wins against Simpson College and Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon. The Lyons defeated the Storm, 6-4, and the Mariners, 8-0, in five innings.

Wheaton 6, Simpson 4

Junior Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth) picked up the victory for the Lyons on five innings pitched, four hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks. Classmate Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) closed out the final two innings yielding five hits, two runs (all earned), one free pass and one strikeout.

Down 2-1 in the top of the third, senior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) crushed a solo home run to right field to even the score at 2-2. Sophomore Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter) kept the offense going with a double to right field and advanced to third on a wild pitch before freshman Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass./Milford) followed with a two-bagger to right for a 3-2 advantage.

Wheaton tacked on two more runs in the fourth as Timoteo and Fairbanks provided the offense once again. Timoteo ripped a two-run double scoring Rocha and sophomore Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton), while Fairbanks plated Timoteo for the second time on the day with a base knock to right field.

The Storm mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, but with the bases loaded the game was ruled over after Simpson College performed an illegal substitution after recording its second out in the frame.

Wheaton 8, Mitchell 0 (five innings)

Senior tri-captain Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) earned a complete shutout in the five inning game allowing just one hit and one walk to go along with a game-high seven strikeouts.

Timoteo, Berardi, freshman Katelyn Andrade (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) and sophomores Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) and Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) all had an RBI as the Lyons scored six runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to force the mercy rule against Mitchell.

Berardi produced the game-winning hit in the bottom of the fifth with a bases loaded single.

Wheaton (2-0) returns to action tomorrow against Westminster (Pa.) and Waynesburg with game times scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12 a.m., respectively.
