Softball Takes Two From RIC, Pushes Season Record to 17-1

Lyons' offense continues red-hot pace with 20 runs in doubleheader sweep

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team produced 25 hits and scored 20 runs en route to its doubleheader sweep of Rhode Island College (RIC) by scores of 8-0 (six innings) and 12-5 (six innings) on Tuesday evening at Clark Field. Game two cooncluded after the top half of the sixth due to darkness. The Lyons also pushed their winning streak to 15-straight games (Mar. 9-25) which now ranks tied for second all-time in program history.

WHEATON 8, RIC 0 (Six Innings)

Junior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) hurled a two-hit shutout to improve her record to 3-1 in the circle for the Lyons on the season. Berardi only faced three hitters over the minimum in throwing 87 pitches (54 for strikes) alongside one walk and a game-high four strikeouts.

RIC senior Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, R.I./Veterans) suffered the loss on 5 2/3 innings, 13 hits, eight runs (two earned) and four walks.

Wheaton senior Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) got the offense going after classmate Ashley Vertente (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) scored a on throwing error with a two-run single to center for a 3-0 advantage.

In the third, sophomore Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) added to the lead with a two-run double to center. Classmate Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI double to left field plating Rocha.

The Lyons forced the mercy rule in the sixth pushing home a run on a throwing error and a bases loaded walk by Vertente.

WHEATON 12, RIC 5 (Six Innings, Called Due To Darkness)

Rocha bumped her record to 2-0 on the year throwing three innings in relief, yielding three hits, and one run (earned). Freshman Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) got the start and went three innings, gave up six hits, four runs (all earned), one walk and struck out two hitters.

Anchorwomen freshman Lindsey Cabral (North Providence, R.I./North Providence) was tagged with the loss over 4 1/3 innings, 12 hits and 12 runs (ten earned).

Senior Stacy Pokora (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) put RIC ahead 3-0 in the top of the first as she launched a three-run homer to left-center.

Berardi responded for the Lyons in the bottom half with a two-run blast, her first of the season, to cut into the deficit at 3-2.

In the second, the Anchorwomen scratched a run across home plate on a sacrifice bunt, while Wheaton freshman Rebecca Seifert (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) notched an RBI single through the right side and Hart plated a run on a groundout to even the score at 4-4.

The Lyons took the lead for good in the third as freshman Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass./Milford) slugged a grand slam to right field, her second home run of the season.

Sykora added an RBI double in the fourth, but Wheaton continued to supply its pitching staff runs with the long ball as Hatch crushed a two-run dinger to right-center in the fifth. Seifert also lifted a sac fly to center and senior tri-captain Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) drew a bases loaded walk to round out the scoring for the Blue and White.

Hatch finished the doubleheader sweep going 4-for-6 with three runs, one double, a home run and three RBI. Brillon was 4-for-6 with a run, two doubles, two RBI and two walks, while Fairbanks went 3-for-6 with three runs, one double, one homer, four RBI and a 1.167 slugging percentage.

Wheaton (17-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) travels to Emerson College for a conference doubleheader on Friday, March 28 at 3 p.m. RIC (3-9) heads to Worcester State University for a non-league clash this Thursday at 4 p.m.
