#25 Wheaton Splits NEWMAC Doubleheader With Smith

Lyons now 29-5 overall, 13-3 in NEWMAC play

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team, ranked No. 25 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) Top 25 national poll, split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with Smith College on Friday evening. The Lyons took game one by a 6-1 score, while the Pioneers bounced back in game two with a 3-0 decision.

WHEATON 6, SMITH 1

Senior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) improved to 13-2 on the season with a complete-game effort in the circle for the Lyons. Baker scattered seven hits, allowed one run (earned) and did not issue a walk alongside five strikeouts.

Smith sophomore starter Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) took the loss (12-5) on five innings pitched, three hits, three runs (one earned), zero walks and three punchouts.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the first as junior Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) delivered an RBI single to left field scoring sophomore Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) from second base. Brown set up the scoring with a one-out double, her third of the season.

Wheaton evened the score in the third on a run-producing double by sophomore Erin Deneen (Framingham, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and claimed the lead for good in the next frame on a two-run home run from classmate Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter) which landed in center field.

Timoteo added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single to left-center and senior Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) capped the scoring in the seventh with a bases loaded single to right-center, her 17th RBI of the year. Classmate Ashley Vertente (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) also scored on the backend of the play as Smith elected to throw to third base after Brillon smacked her single into the right-center gap.

SMITH 3, WHEATON 0

Martucci bouced back for the Pioneers in game two hurling a complete-game, five-hit shutout with four strikeouts and zero walks.

Wheaton junior Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) was dealt the loss on four innings pitched, six hits, three runs (all earned), one walk and two strikeouts. Classmate Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) scattered two hits over the last two frames with a walk and a strikeout.

Richardson struck once again for the hosts in the first inning but this time with a two-run double to left field plating Brown and freshman Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard). Both Blokker and Brown had singles with one out in the frame to set up the scoring.

Freshman Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) increased the lead to 3-0 in the second with an RBI single through the left side of the infield with two outs.

The Lyons had runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but Martucci squandered both scoring threats en route to her team-leading 13th win of the season.

Deneen, Timoteo and Brillon all finished the afternoon with two hits, while Timoteo had three RBI and a run scored.

Wheaton (29-5, 13-3 NEWMAC) returns to action tomorrow on the road against Springfield College for a NEWMAC doubleheader with game one scheduled for 12 p.m. Smith (14-10, 7-9 NEWMAC) hosts Coast Guard Academy for a conference matchup beginning at 12 p.m.
