Lyons to play Beloit & St. Scholastic tomorrow afternoon
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Wheaton College softball team opened up its 2015 season with losses to a pair of nationally ranked opponents on Saturday evening at DiamondPlex in Florida. In their first game of the day, the Lyons fell to No. 25 Simpson College (Iowa) by a 3-0 score and also dropped a 7-1 contest against No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan University.
No. 25 Simpson 3, Wheaton 0
Simpson junior pitcher Abbie VanVleet (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) tossed a complete game, five-hitter (all singles) alongside one walk and three strikeouts to improve to 4-0 in the circle this season. Wheaton senior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) took the loss on 5 1/3 innings pitched, seven hits, three runs (all earned), three walks and three strikeouts.
The Storm, who are currently 10-0 in 2015, scored two runs in the third inning as Stacie Brown (Des Moines, Iowa/East) notched an RBI single to center and VanVleet worked a bases loaded walk. Simpson added its final run in the sixth on a wild pitch.
Lyons' junior center fielder Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) went 2-for-2 from the leadoff spot to go with one walk, while sophomore Katelyn Andrade (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk), Berardi and Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton) all had singles in the loss.
No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan 7, Wheaton 1
Senior reliever Chloe Montgomery (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) let up one hit and struck out four batters over four shutout innings to claim the Titans first victory of the season. First-year Mackenzie Marquis (Herscher, Ill./Herscher) received the no-decision on two innings pitched, one hit, one run (unearned), four walks and two strikeouts.
Wheaton sophomore starter Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) was dealt the loss on nine hits, seven runs (all earned), one walk and one punchout. Senior Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) was effective in relief tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings to go alongside two free passes.
The Lyons took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning as Hart worked a leadoff walk, stole second and then third base before scoring on a throwing error that went into left field.
Illinois Wesleyan evened the score in the second as sophomore Sarah Platt (Prospect Heights, Ill./Hersey) roped an RBI single to center to score junior Danielle Smith (Marquette Heights, Ill./Pekin Community).
In the third, the Titans broke the game open with a six-run frame highlighted by a two-run double down the right field line by first-year Maggie Graham (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrensville South).
Wheaton (0-2) will play two games tomorrow in Winter Haven, Fla. against Beloit at 1:30 p.m. and St. Scholastica at 4:45 p.m.
