Christmas & Berardi earn victories in the circle for the Lyons
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – After being swept by two nationally ranked teams on Saturday, the Wheaton College softball team claimed its first two wins of the 2015 season with an 8-1 victory over Beloit College in game one of its doubleheader and a 5-3 decision against St. Scholastica in the second contest on Sunday afternoon at DiamondPlex.
Wheaton 8, Beloit 1
Lyons' senior pitcher Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth) struck out three batters, allowed two hits and one earned run over four innings of work to pick up her first win of the season. First-year Allison Cox (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) threw three shutout innings and struck out her first career batter in relief, en route to the 8-1 victory.
Wheaton junior center fielder Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) went 2-for-4 as the leadoff hitter, with a three-run inside the park home run that broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore shortstop Mary DeMoura (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) added to the Lyons' run total with a two-run triple in the second inning (3-0).
Senior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) went 1-for-2 on the afternoon, which included a triple in the top of the first inning (1-0) and a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth that extended Wheaton's lead 7-1. Sophomore Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) concluded the scoring (8-1) for the Lyons with an RBI triple to right center field that plated junior Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton). Beloit scored its lone run on an RBI double to left center field by senior catcher Emily Dorjath (Batavia, Ill.) in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Wheaton 5, St. Scholastica 3
Berardi registered her first win of the 2015 season in a 5-3 triumph over St. Scholastica in the back half of this afternoon's doubleheader. Berardi struck out four batters, allowed five hits and allowed an unearned run over her 6 2/3 innings pitched in the circle. Sophomore Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) allowed two runs (both earned), one hit and a strikeout before recording the final out of the game.
Welch went 2-for-3, scored a run and contributed an RBI from the sixth spot in the lineup, while Bouthillette and Morgan Walsh (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) batted 2-for-4, plating a combined three runs in the win.
In the bottom of the first, Berardi began the scoring for the Lyons with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Hart for an early 1-0 lead. St. Scholastica answered in the next half inning when junior Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld) scored on an error.
Wheaton went on to score three runs in the top half of the fourth inning in three consecutive at-bats. Bouthillette brought around Walsh on a triple to right field, Welch doubled to score Bouthillette, and Welch eventually crossed home plate in the frame after junior second baseman Erin Deneen (South Yarmouth, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) singled her in.
St. Scholastica responded with two runs in the sixth as Dailey knocked an RBI double to left field and Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) recorded a run-producing grounded out to first base to cut into the deficit at 5-3. Berardi ended the rally in the frame with a ground out to second and also closed out the seventh despite giving up a one-out double down the left field line with a line out and a ground out to short.
Wheaton (2-2) will play Thomas More College at 10 a.m. tomorrow and Illinois College at 12:15 p.m. tomorrow in Kissimmee, Fla.
