Softball Extends Win Streak To Four Games With Wins Over Thomas More And Illinois College

Berardi claims her second win of the season

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Wheaton College softball team improved its win streak to four-straight games on Monday afternoon with a 2-1 come from behind victory over Thomas More College and a 5-0 win versus Illinois College at Osceola County Softball Complex.

Lyons' sophomore starter Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) registered her first win of the season in a complete game effort in the circle. Cimino allowed a single earned run, four hits, one walk and struck out a season-high four batters to improve her record to 1-1 this year.  

Junior outfielder Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot and scored a run. Senior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) tallied an RBI and was 1-for-2 with a walk from the three spot in the lineup, while sophomore catcher Katelyn Andrade (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk)  produced the game-winning run for her first RBI of the season. 

Thomas More junior shortstop Ana Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the top half of the third inning, when she knocked an RBI single to center field that plated senior outfielder Catie Luck (Mainevile, Ohio/Little Miami). The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Wheaton rallied to take the lead and close out the victory.. 

Hart hit a double down the left field line to kick off the inning and was able to advance to third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Berardi plated the game-tying run on an RBI single to right field to knot the score at 1-1. Berardi then stole second base, which put the go-ahead run in scoring position for the Blue and White.

Andrade then came to bat with two outs in the inning and the tying run on second base. Andrade proceeded to drill the ball to center field which plated Berardi and gave the Lyons a 2-1 lead. Cimino came back to the circle in the top half of the seventh inning for Wheaton and recorded three consecutive outs, including two strikeouts to seal the win for the Lyons.

In game two of Monday's doubleheader, Berardi allowed four hits, one walk and struck out four batters over five shutout innings to pick up her second victory for Wheaton in 2015. Senior Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) and first-year Allison Cox (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) each pitched a single inning of shutout ball to close the game for the Blue and White.  

Sophomore third baseman Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) went 2-for-4, scored a run and also notched an RBI to highlight the Lyons in game two. Four other batters for Wheaton tallied RBI's in the shutout victory including juniors Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro), Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) and Erin Deneen (South Yarmouth, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) and sophomore Morgan Walsh (Norwell, Mass./Norwell)

Lyons' sophomore Rebecca Seifert (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) began the top of the third inning with a bunt single, while Hart walked and stole second, which put the first two batters of the frame in scoring position. Hatch then plated Seifert for the Blue and White's first run on a ground out to second base.  

With Hart already on third base, Walsh knocked a single through the left side of the infield that scored Hart to give the Lyons a 2-0 advantage. Wheaton added to its lead when Rocha hit an RBI double to centerfield. Deneen followed in the next at bat with an RBI double of her own, which scored Rocha giving Wheaton a 4-0 advantage.

Bouthillette rounded out the offensive highlight for Wheaton with an RBI double that scored Jessica Cochrane (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) from second for another insurance run (5-0). Cox pitched a clean seventh for the Lyons as all three outs came via ground outs. 

Wheaton (4-2) has a day off tomorrow before the Lyons face-off against Coe College at 10 a.m. and No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday in Winter Haven, Fla.
