Softball Splits On Final Day In Florida

Bouthillette goes 6-for-7 with two runs and four RBI

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Wheaton College softball team concluded its final day of play in its spring break trip to Florida with a split against Husson University and Farmingdale State. The Lyons dropped game one against the Eagles by 9-3 score but rebounded in game two versus the Rams with an 11-3 win in five innings.

Husson 9, Wheaton 3

Husson senior reliever Kayla Merrill (Bethel, Maine/Telstar Regional) was credited with the win (1-2) on four scoreless innings, two hits, one walk and a game-high five strikeouts. Sophomore starter Alannah Healy (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) received the no-decision throwing one inning, while yielding five hits, three runs (all earned) and one walk.

Wheaton reliever Allison Cox (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) took the loss on 2/3 of an inning, four hits and six runs (all unearned).

The Lyons led 2-0 after the first half inning of play as sophomore Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass./Milford) and junior Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton) drove in one run apiece with base hits to center field and right field, respectively.

Husson countered with three runs in the bottom half on two bases loaded walks and a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of senior Haley Spiers (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding).

Wheaton evened the score in the top of the second inning sophomore Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) ripped an RBI single to left field to drive in classmate Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth).

Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning when the Eagles' offense exploded for six runs (all unearned). Sophomore Casey Lopes (New Bedford, Mass./Greater New Bedford Voc Tech) highlighted the six-run inning with a bases clearing double to left center field.

Merrill closed out the remainder of the game striking out three batters while only giving up two hits.

Wheaton 11, Farmingdale State 3 (5 innings)

In their first meeting since last year's NCAA Tournament, Wheaton returned the favor to Farmingdale State handing the Rams an 11-3 loss.

Senior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) collected her fourth win of the season on five innings pitched, six hits, three runs (all unearned), no walks and one strikeout.

Farmingdale State's Taylor Webb (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) took the loss over four innings as the senior starter allowed 14 hits, ten runs (all earned) and three walks to go with one strikeout.

Rocha, Bouthillette and Fairbanks did most of the damage offensively for the Lyons as the trio combined for nine RBI and four runs in the win. Rocha had a two-run triple in the second, while Bouthillette followed with a single to plate Rocha for a 5-0 advantage.

Fairbanks, who notched an RBI single down the left field line in the first inning to make it a 2-0 game after Berardi plated a run with a double in the frame, launched a solo homer in the third to put Wheaton ahead by a 6-1 score.

In the fourth, Bouthillette added a run-producing single to left field, while Fairbanks roped a two-run single to left field later in the inning for a 9-1 gap.

Junior Erin Deneen (South Yarmouth, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) capped the scoring in the fourth with a single to left field to plate Berardi before Bouthillette forced the mercy rule in the fifth with an RBI double to left.

Wheaton (7-3) is scheduled to host Bridgewater State University in its next matchup on Tuesday, March 17 with game one of the doubleheader slated for 3 p.m.
