Berardi ties single-game strikeout record
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team opened up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a pair of wins over Emerson College on Friday evening at Rotch Field. The Blue and White took game one by a 6-1 score and game two by a 10-1 score (five inn).
Wheaton 6, Emerson 1
Wheaton senior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) matched Jackie Demling's '04 school record for strikeouts in a single-game with 15 total to push her record to 5-1 on the season. Berardi completed all seven innings in the contest allowing just three hits and one run (earned) alongside zero walks. Additionally, Berardi struck out at least one batter in each inning and struck out the side in both the first and third innings to equal Demling's mark.
Emerson junior starter Samantha Corey (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) took the loss on six innings pitched, eight hits, six runs (all earned), one walk and two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the second inning, Berardi put the Lyons on the board with her first home run of the season to lead off the frame.
Emerson evened the score in the top of the fourth inning on a solo shot by first-year Lyndi McIntyre (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Northwest), but Wheaton responded with five runs over the next three innings to close out the game one victory.
In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) launched her team-leading second home run of the season to lead off the inning, while classmate Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass./Milford) notched an RBI single and junior Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton) plated the final run of the frame on a fielder's choice.
Berardi added a sacrifice fly in fifth and sophomore Katelyn Andrade (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) drilled her second homer of the year in the sixth to round out the scoring.
Wheaton 10, Emerson 1
Lyons' sophomore starter Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) picked up the win on five innings pitched, one run (earned), zero walks and four strikeouts.
First-year Alexis Ellis-Alvarez (Santee, Calif./West Hills) suffered the loss over 2 1/3 innings of work, nine hits and seven runs (all earned).
Wheaton struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning as junior Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) connected for a run-producing triple, sophomore Morgan Walsh (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field and junior Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter) roped an RBI single.
In the third, the Lyons blasted three home runs in the frame including a two-run shot by Walsh and solo homers by Timoteo and Bouthillette.
Walsh added a two-run single in the fourth, while Bouthillette drove in a run on a sac fly to right field.
Walsh finished the contest going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and five RBI. Her five RBIs in the contest are tied for tenth all-time in a single-game in program history.
Wheaton (9-3, 2-0 NEWMAC) is scheduled to host WPI on Sunday at 12 p.m. Emerson (5-7, 0-2 NEWMAC) takes on Springfield College tomorrow at home at 3:30 p.m.
