Senior earns first career POW honor
NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College senior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball Player of the Week by the league office.
At the plate, Berardi hit .700/.750/1.300 on the week going 7-for-10 with three doubles, one home run, three RBI and two walks. In the circle, Berardi earned wins against Emerson and WPI in a 2-0 week for the Lyons compiling 17 strikeouts over 13 innings pitched for a 1.08 ERA. Against Emerson on Friday, Berard tied a program record for strikeouts with 15. Berardi followed up that performance on Sunday by scattering six hits over six innings to help the Blue and White defeat WPI in game one of its doubleheader by a 6-1 score.
Berardi currently ranks second in the NEWMAC in ERA (1.00) and wins (6), third in innings pitched (42.0) and sixth in strikeouts (29). Offensively, Berardi is positioned seventh in batting average (.452), fifth in on-base percentage (.500), third in slugging percentage (.806), second in doubles (6), fifth in triples (1) and home runs (1) and tenth in hits (14) and runs (8).
Earlier this season, Berardi claimed NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week accolades on March 16. Berardi went 3-0 in the circle for Wheaton from March 9-15 posting a 0.41 ERA on 17 innings pitched, 17 hits, four runs (one earned), one walk and five strikeouts. Berardi, who held opponents to a .250 batting average, was dominant in her second win of the week over No. 6 nationally ranked Illinois Wesleyan as the senior hurled a complete-game allowing seven hits and just one run (earned) in the victory. Berardi also picked up the triumph over Farmingdale State, who the Lyons lost to last season in the NCAA Tournament. Offensively on the week, Berardi hit .333/.467/.583 with four hits in 12 at-bats, three walks and five RBI.
Wheaton (11-3, 4-0 NEWMAC) is scheduled to host UMass Boston this coming Tuesday for a pair of non-conference games slated to start at 3 p.m.
