BABSON PARK, Mass. - Behind a four home runs, the Wheaton College softball team swept Babson College by scores of 10-1 (six innings) and 4-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday afternoon Alumni Field.
Wheaton 10, Babson 1 (Six Innings)
Lyons' senior pitcher Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) improved her record to 7-1 as she threw the first five innings, allowed one run (unearned), five hits and one walk to go with three strikeouts. Classmate Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) sealed the victory for the Blue and White allowing a single hit, one walk and struck out one batter over the final inning.
Offensively, Berardi and sophomore Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) each drilled home runs and drove in three runs apiece for the Lyons, while junior Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter) came off the bench as a pinch hitter and plated three runs of her own. Bouthillete now leads the Blue and White with four home runs and 15 RBI's this spring.
Wheaton scored the games' first five runs of the contest - two in the first and three in the second inning. After junior Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) walked and stole second to begin the game, Bouthillette brought her home on a groundout, while Berardi helped her own cause as she cranked a home run to center field that made the score 2-0.
In the third, Wheaton added to its lead as Hart crossed the plate on a fielding error and Berardi roped a line drive to left field that brought home two more for the Lyons, making the score 5-0.
Babson got on the scoreboard with its only run of the game when junior Caitie Benoit (Williamstown, Mass./Doherty) ripped a single down the left field line that scored senior Megan Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J./Hun School of Princeton).
After a 1-2-3 inning from Berardi in the bottom of the fourth, the Lyons' offense struck for five more runs in the top of the final inning. Timoteo cleared the bases with a line drive to right center with the bases loaded, while Bouthillette walloped a home run over the left center field fence to give Wheaton a 10-1 advantage. Christmas used a pair of fly outs and a strikeout in the bottom of the sixth to wrap up the game one victory.
Wheaton 4, Babson 1
Lyons' sophomore Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) pitched shutout ball over the first three innings, as she scattered three hits, allowed one walk and struck out one batter in a no-decision effort. Junior Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) was credited with the win, her first of the season (1-0), as she threw the next three innings, allowing one run (unearned), two hits, two walks alongside two punchouts, while Christmas picked up her first save of the season with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh for Wheaton.
Hart went 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot in game two and gave the Wheaton the early 1-0 lead with a solo home run, her second of the season, in the top of the first inning. Hart also led of the third inning with a single to left center field and stole second to put herself in scoring position. An RBI single by Berardi drove in the Lyons' second run of the contest.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Wheaton sophomore Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass./Milford) registered her first home run of the spring to extend the Lyons' advantage to 3-0, while Hart came around to score on a wild pitch for the Blue and White's fourth run of the game in the top of the fifth.
Junior infielder Madison Dinaso (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) crossed the plate on an RBI single to left field by Benoit in the bottom half of the sixth innings for Babson's only run in the game. Christmas came out of the pen for the Lyons for the second time on the day and registered three-straight outs to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Wheaton (11-3, 4-0 NEWMAC) is scheduled to play Coast Guard in a conference doubleheader on Friday with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., while Babson (10-6, 2-2 NEWMAC) hosts Tufts for two non-conference games on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
