Lyons now 8-0 in conference play
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team pushed its winning streak to nine-straight games with a pair of 12-0 victories over conference foe Coast Guard Academy on Friday evening at Clark Field.
Wheaton 12, Coast Guard 0 (Game 1)
Senior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) registered her New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) leading eighth win in the circle tossing four shutout innings alongside two hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) completed the fifth inning for the Lyons allowing three hits and no walks to go with one punchout.
Coast Guard junior starter Sarah Sorensen (Lakewood, Wash.) took the loss on 3 2/3 innings pitched, eight hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks.
Leading 3-0 after the third inning, the Blue and White doubled their advantage in the fourth with a two-run blast from sophomore shortstop Mary DeMoura (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) and an RBI single up the middle by classmate Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln). DeMoura's two-run shot was the first home run of her collegiate career.
Wheaton then broke the game completely open in the fifth with a six-run frame highlighted by a solo home run, which hit the scoreboard in right field, off the bat of sophomore Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass./Milford) and a bases clearing triple by classmate Jessica Cochrane (Walpole, Mass./Walpole).
Coast Guard threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs but Cimino induced a ground out to third to wrap up the game one victory.
Wheaton 12, Coast Guard 0 (Game 2)
Senior starter Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) completed all five innings for the Lyons yielding five hits and zero walks to go with two strikeouts to push her record to 3-0.
Sorenson shouldered the loss in game two as well giving up 16 hits and 11 runs (ten earned) in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
The Lyons exploded offensively in the fifth inning again this time with eight runs to complete the sweep.
Junior Erin Deneen (South Yarmouth, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) ripped a two-run double to left center, while DeMoura notched an RBI single down the left line to make it 7-0. Junior Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) followed with a run-producing double, while Bouthillette scorched a two-run double to left center field for a 10-0 gap.
Fairbanks added a sacrifice fly to right center and sophomore Katelyn Andrade (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) capped the scoring with an RBI single to left center.
Hart finished the two-game sweep going 6-for-7 with five runs scored, three doubles and three RBI. Bouthillette knocked in five runs, while DeMoura went 3-for-5 with four runs, one home run and three RBI.
Wheaton (15-3, 8-0 NEWMAC) hosts Clark University in a NEWMAC doubleheader tomorrow with game one scheduled for 12 p.m. Coast Guard (8-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) travels to Babson tomorrow for a twin bill, starting at 12 p.m.
