Lyons undefeated in NEWMAC play at 10-0
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team improved its winning streak to 11-straight games and remained undefeated in conference matchups this spring with a sweep of Clark University on Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Clark Field. The Lyons won 13-0 (five inn.) in game one and 12-4 (six inn.) in the second game.
Since returning from Florida, the Blue and White have won all ten of their conference games and have outscored opponents by an 89-11 margin. In that ten game stretch, the Lyons are ranked first in the NEWMAC in runs (89), hits (134), doubles (35), home runs (14), runs batted in (82), stolen bases (17), batting average (.467), on-base percentage (.486) and slugging percentage (.742).
Junior Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) currently sits atop the NEWMAC leaderboard with a .597 batting average (40-for-67) and second overall with 16 stolen bases this spring, while sophomore Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) has drilled four home runs and driven in 24 RBI to pace the conference in both categories.
In the circle, senior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) leads the NEWMAC with a 0.82 earned run average and is tied for the lead in wins among three other student-athletes with eight wins (8-1).
WHEATON 13, CLARK 0 (5 inn.)
Lyons' sophomore pitcher Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) threw a complete game one-hitter allowing just two walks alongside three strikeouts to improve her record to 3-1 this season.
Clark senior Hayley Buckheit (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills Regional) shouldered the loss on 3 2/3 innings pitched, 12 hits, seven runs (all earned) to go with three strikeouts.
Wheaton put a seven-spot on the scoreboard and batted around in the bottom of the first inning. Hart led off the frame with a single to left center and stole second to get the offense going. Sophomore Rebecca Seifert (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) brought home Hart on an RBI single through the right side, Berardi knocked an RBI double to center, sophomore Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass./Milford) lined an RBI double to right center and classmate Katelyn Andrade (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) ripped a single to right field that plated the Lyons' fourth run of the inning.
The Lyons went on to score three more runs in the bottom of the same frame, highlighted by a two-run double to right field via junior Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro).
Cimino shut down the Cougars' offense with three-straight 1-2-3 innings through the middle frames, while Fairbanks added to the Lyons' run total with a leadoff solo shot to right center field in the bottom of the third inning.
From that point forward, Cimino allowed one baserunner on a walk in the top of the fifth, but a strikeout and a ground out secured the 13-0 game one victory.
WHEATON 12, CLARK 4 (6 inn.)
Lyons' senior Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) picked up her fourth win of the season (4-0) as she threw the first 3 1/3 innings allowing five hits, four runs (all earned) and two walks in addition to a season-high six strikeouts. Junior Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) threw 2 2/3 shutout innings yielding just one hit to go with three strikeouts to seal the sweep.
Clark first-year Sami West (Gonic, N.H./Spaulding) took the loss in game two as well as giving up ten hits, eight runs (six earned) and three walks in five innings pitched.
Bouthillette and junior catcher Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton) each roped doubles that brought home two runners, which accounted for the Lyons' four-run bottom of the first. Wheaton added its fifth run in the second on an RBI single to right center field by junior Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter).
Clark scored its first runs of the afternoon in the top of the fourth inning to snap a 19-inning scoreless streak established by the Lyons' pitching staff that dated back to their game against Babson on March 31. First-year Leah Bodin (Andover, Vt./Green Mountain) worked a walk with the bases loaded, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch that plated the Cougars' second run. With runners on second and third, sophomore Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H./ConVal Regional) cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to cut into the deficit at 5-4.
Wheaton responded the in bottom half of the frame with five runs that put the game out of reach. Seifert drilled an RBI double down the left field line, Fairbanks hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Hart, Welch connected on a two-run double and Timoteo crossed the plate on a fielding error.
Rocha the pitched back-to-back clean innings for the Blue and White, which resulted in a 12-4 game two win and the doubleheader sweep.
Seifert finished the day with a 6-for-8 performance at the plate, five runs scored and four RBI, while Bouthillette went 3-for-6 in the twin bill and knocked in three runs of her own.
Wheaton (17-3, 10-0 NEWMAC) travels to Wellesley College, last season's NEWMAC Champion, on Friday, April 10 for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Clark (2-12, 0-4 NEWMAC) heads to MIT for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 7 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
