BOSTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team swept the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Emerson College Lions in a double-header 11-4 and 12-3 at Rotch Field on Friday.
The Lyons advance 9-7 (3-1 NEWMAC) on the season while the Lions fall to 8-14 (0-4 NEWMAC).
GAME ONE - Wheaton 11, Emerson 4
Wheaton kicked off the scoring crusade immediately in the first inning when senior Marissa Timoteo pushed in junior Mary DeMoura for an RBI. The Lyons came through again in the third when junior Caroline Fairbanks doubled, senior Kelly Welch singled and junior Jessica Cochrane all tallying RBIs to put Wheaton ahead of Emerson, 4-0.
The Lions put themselves within one run at the bottom of the third when Kodie Cash belted a three-run homer, but Fairbanks wouldn't let Wheaton stop there as she crushed her own home run in the fifth inning where the Lyons ended up making it 6-3.
Wheaton would continue on to score runs the last two innings of the games, including three doubles, two from Timoteo that sealed the 11-4 win for the Lyons. Junior pitcher Danielle Cimino earned the win, striking out eight and moving to 4-3 overall.
GAME TWO - Wheaton 12, Emerson 3 (6 inn.)
Wheaton perfected the sweep against Emerson with two big innings in game two, the first coming in the second when senior Madeline Hatch dished out a huge three-run homer, scoring in senior Erin Deneen and junior Katelyn Andrade, making it 3-2.
The Lions would tie it at the bottom of the sixth off a double, but they would be stopped there as Wheaton boosted nine runs in the sixth inning to claim the victory. DeMoura started the slugfest for the Lyons with a double, scoring in two. Fairbanks and junior Morgan Walsh singled to tally additional RBIs and junior Emily Bouthillette doubled to jump the score ahead 12-3.
Wheaton's matchup scheduled against Babson College (10-7, 1-2 NEWMAC) on Saturday has been postponed to Sunday due to weather with double-header action at 12 and 2 p.m. at Clark Field.
