NORTON, Mass. - Closing out their long home stand, the Wheaton College softball team capped off the weekend with a sweep of the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in a non-conference double-header on Sunday afternoon. The Lyons won game one 11-3 and game two 8-7.
Wheaton improves to 17-11 overall while the Anchorwomen fall to 11-13.
GAME 1 - Wheaton 11, RIC 3 (6 inn.)
The Lyons kicked off the game with a big second inning, starting with a two-run double by Erin Deneen to left field that scored in Marissa Timoteo and Kelly Welch. Taking advantage of well placed hits and a fielder's choice, Wheaton was quickly up 5-0 as Mary DeMoura knocked in the final run of the inning off a bunt to boost Wheaton's lead.
The Anchorwomen quickly responded in the top of the third when Jacqueline Gauthler homered to left center field to put them on the board. Kelsey Burgess and Mary Sweeney each tallied singles of their own to knock in an RBI to make the score 6-3.
The Lyons would go on to register three runs in the bottom half of the inning and later seal the victory in the sixth when Chloe Woodward singled to right field, bringing in Emma Hart and Madeline Hatch for the 11-3 final.
Pitcher Danielle Cimino earned the win for the Lyons and advances to 6-5 overall.
GAME 2 - Wheaton 8, RIC 7
The Anchorwomen started the game dishing out three runs in the first when Nicole Venturini singled to left field to bring in the first run. RIC would go on to tally one more single and a sac fly to bring them up 3-0. The Lyons responded in the bottom half with one run off of Welch's double to left center that scored in Timoteo.
RIC tacked on one more run in the second before Wheaton found their momentum in the third and fourth inning, scoring seven runs to take the lead. Welch kicked off the third when she smacked a three-run homer to left field to tie the game. The Anchorwomen utilized three runs in the fourth to regain the lead, but that would be enough as the Lyons would tack on four more runs in the bottom half to get the 8-7 advantage.
Pitcher Shelbi Wilson collected the win for Wheaton and moves to 2-1 overall.
