Softball Splits Series at Smith; Earns Third Seed in NEWMAC

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College softball team traveled to Smith College in their final New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season matchup where the Pioneers took game one 8-6 and the Lyons won game two 8-1. The Lyons have claimed the third seed in the NEWMAC while WPI clinches the regular season title and MIT holds the second seed.

Wheaton moves to 22-12 overall and 12-6 in conference competition while Smith adjusts to 13-19 overall and 9-9 in NEWMAC play.

GAME ONE- Smith 8, Wheaton 6

Continuing action from Friday when the game was postponed due to inclement weather, the Lyons and Pioneers entered Sunday tied 5-5. Wheaton scored its five runs off a two singles, two doubles and a fielder's choice to jump on the board.

it was the bottom of the sixth when the Pioneers stole the lead with a single to right field that scored in two, followed by a an infield single that tacked on one more run and secured the 8-6 win for Smith.

Pitcher Danielle Cimino (8-6) tallied four strikeouts in her six innings pitched.

GAME TWO- Wheaton 8, Smith 1

Wheaton was first to put runs on the board during the third when Caroline Fairbanks doubled to left field to knock in Emma Hart and Madeline Hatch. Smith responded in the second half of the inning with a solo home run to right field that put the score at 2-1.

Fairbanks continued her momentum in the fifth when she drilled a single to right field to once again bring in Hatch. Emily Bouthillette followed her lead and registered a single of her own to score in Hart, Kelly Welch offered a sac fly and Marissa Timoteo doubled to center field to close out the inning and extend the lead to 6-1.

Hatch and Mary DeMoura helped seal the 8-1 victory for the Lyons in the sixth when they tallied a triple and single to bring in the final two runs.

Pitcher Allison Cox (10-2) earned the win for Wheaton, striking out four.


The Lyons travel to Tufts University on Tuesday in a non-conference double-header slated to start at 3 p.m. On Friday, Wheaton will open the NEWMAC Tournament to battle Springfield College at 2:30 p.m. at MIT. Full bracket here.
