WORCESTER, Mass. - The Wheaton College softball team dropped their second game in the NEWMAC Tournament against the Wellesley College Blue, 8-6, on Saturday in Worcester, Mass. The loss eliminates the Lyons from the tournament after dropping their first game against MIT on Friday.
With the loss, Wheaton falls to 23-14 overall while the Blue improve to 17-17 and advance to take on the winner of the Springfield College vs. Babson College game.
Wellesley's Amanda Manning belted a two-out grand slam in the top of the sixth to lift the fifth-seeded Blue to an 8-6 come from behind triumph over third-seeded Wheaton.
Trailing 6-0 after two, Wellesley began to chip away at their deficit with two runs in the fourth and again in the fifth before Manning cleared the fence, and the bases, in the sixth.
The Blue put two on the board in the top of the fourth behind a 2-RBI single to center by Veronica Locher. Wellesley then had a pair of runners in scoring position; however, a ground ball double play ended the inning. The Blue inched closer with two more in the fifth as Manning connected on a productive out and Ashtyn Coleman followed with an RBI single.
After the first nine batters of the game went down in order, Wheaton's Kelly Welch led off the home half of the second with a single to center. She would be the first of six Lyons to cross home plate in the frame as Erin Deneen, Mary DeMoura and Caroline Fairbanks each drove in a pair of RBI.
Deneen and Emma Hart each went 2-for-3 as DeMoura and Emily Bouthillette had a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Danielle Cimino struck out two in four-plus innings of work while Allison Cox shouldered the decision (10-4).
The Lyons travel to Tufts University for a make-up non-conference double-header on Tuesday, May 3, with action slated to begin at 3 p.m.
