SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The No. 3 seed Wheaton College softball team opened the 2017 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament against the No. 6 seed Wellesley College Blue Friday afternoon, hosted at Springfield College. The Blue defeated the Lyons, 2-1 in the double-elimination tournament.
Wheaton (17-16) earned their lone run of the game in the first inning when senior Mary DeMoura jumped on base first with a single to the left side. She was later brought home by sophomore Emily Schlapak who got on base due to a fielding error.
It was a battle of defense for the majority of the game until Wellesley finally broke through in the fourth inning when Veronica Locher smacked a double to left center to tally two RBI and gain the 2-1 lead.
The Blue would hang on to the lead, limiting Wheaton to only five hits on the day. Senior pitcher Danielle Cimino (11-7) recorded three strikeouts for Wheaton and held Wellesley to only four hits.
The Lyons look to stay alive in the NEWMAC Tournament and will compete next on Saturday against the MIT Engineers. Game time is set for 11 a.m., hosted at WPI. For the complete NEWMAC Championship bracket, click HERE.
